Gather Strength from Distress

I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death. This is to be a collection without order, taken from many papers, which I have copied here, hoping afterward to arrange them according to the subjects of which they treat; and I believe that I shall have to repeat the same thing several times; for which, O reader, blame me not because the subjects are many, and memory cannot retain them … all the more because of the long intervals between one time of writing and another.
I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do. Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake?
~Leonardo da Vinci
